Newt and reptile habitat creation

Thomson Habitats have turned a 30 hectare area of open land into a receptor site for newts and reptiles.  This extensive project forms part of our ongoing mitigation programme on the largest ecological project in Europe.

The works included:

  • Completing a careful destructive search in order to make the area unsuitable for wildlife during the works.
  • GIS mapping of 24 ponds.
  • Commissioning a full UXO survey.
  • Excavating the 24 ponds with varying depths, sizes, shapes and channels.
  • Lining the ponds with bentonite clay lagoon liner.
  • Reprofiling ponds and planting marginal and aquatic plants.
  • Erecting stock fencing.
  • Planting 12,000 native trees and other vegetation.
  • Installing log piles and hibernacula.
  • Designing an ongoing management plan.
