Thomson Habitats have turned a 30 hectare area of open land into a receptor site for newts and reptiles. This extensive project forms part of our ongoing mitigation programme on the largest ecological project in Europe.
The works included:
- Completing a careful destructive search in order to make the area unsuitable for wildlife during the works.
- GIS mapping of 24 ponds.
- Commissioning a full UXO survey.
- Excavating the 24 ponds with varying depths, sizes, shapes and channels.
- Lining the ponds with bentonite clay lagoon liner.
- Reprofiling ponds and planting marginal and aquatic plants.
- Erecting stock fencing.
- Planting 12,000 native trees and other vegetation.
- Installing log piles and hibernacula.
- Designing an ongoing management plan.
