Ecological contracting

Ecological contracting

Thomson Habitats undertake all ecological contracting projects, including:

Wildlife fencing and pitfall traps

Where ecologists recommend trapping and translocation of protected species, our role is to put these recommendations into practice.  We supply and install pitfall traps and wildlife exclusion and containment fencing - from heavy duty HDPE panels for water voles, and continous HDPE for amphibians and reptiles, to short term temporary fencing.  We install specialist fencing to exclude deer, badgers, rabbits and livestock.  Very often, there are specific difficulties in installing fencing, such as working around above-ground pipes and underground services or in made-ground that is composed largely of broken concrete or ballast.  These do not make a job easier, but they certainly make it more interesting and call for application and ingenuity.  Our guide to the types of fencing available may help you decide what fencing you need, or alternatively please call us for further advice.

Vegetation clearance and tree felling

Where a site needs to be cleared for development works in an ecologically sensitive manner, we undertake tree felling, vegetation clearance and destructive searches in cooperation with the environmental management plan and the supervising ecologist.

Treatment of invasive plants

Invasive plants are a serious problem not only on development sites but also in ecologically sensitive areas.  We advise on the most appropriate approach to dealing with the problem case by case.  Very often, the more time that is available the more cost-effective the options.   We control amongst others, Japanese knotweed, giant hogweed, Himalayan balsam, common ragwort, rhododendron and a number of acquatic plants.  Further details of the  treatment of invasive plants is available here, or please call us for further information.
