Australian swamp stone crop (Crassula helmsii)
Australian swamp stone crop (Crassula helmsii)
Australian Swamp Stonecrop was introduced from Australasia in 1911 and has spread at an alarming rate. This plant forms dense carpets across the water surface and excludes all other competitors.
As well as reducing the biodiversity of the water body, it snags anglers lines and can wind itself around boat propellers. It is notoriously difficult to eradicate.
Chemical control of the under water plant is not possible as previous methods using diquat and dichlobenil are no longer acceptable. Glyphosate can be used, but only on those parts of the plant above water, so is of limited use.
Mechanical control of untreated plants is also problematic as broken pieces can regenerate. So this option needs to be employed with caution - catching broken plant material and silt before they disperse and spread the plant further.
