Thomson providing arboricultural solutions for Root Protection Areas

The Thomson Ecology arboricultural team have been working on a very interesting project for WWF UK at their worldwide headquarters at Woking, Surrey. Due to complexities associated with the Root Protection Areas (RPAs) of the retained trees, an innovative solution was required!

The scheme involved the installation of new soft and hard landscaping features within an area that is currently being used as an informal outdoor classroom associated with the Living Planet Centre. The soft landscaping works included a sun-sail, footpath, steps and a level seating area.

As part of our works we produced an Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA) and an Arboricultural Method Statement (AMS). In liaison with the Local Planning Authority (LPA) Tree Officer, it became apparent that there would be significant construction elements within the retained trees’ RPAs.

In order to reduce the level of works within the RPA to the satisfaction of the LPA Tree Officer, we proposed that the sun-sail should be constructed using the Cobra bracing system, and attached to the retained trees. Our proposal not only reduced the levels of construction in the RPAs to an acceptable level, but also had the additional benefit of creating an additional positive visual element to the scheme.

Following our recommendations, the works successfully received planning and have been constructed to the satisfaction of our client.
